Backpacking Through Europe

Product Description

Let's say you are a college-aged/young adult traveler. You are planning to take your first "big" trip to Europe. You want to go to different countries, take the trains, see the sites. You're planning to use a backpack so you can travel lightly and with skill for several weeks or months. You want to save money where it counts so you can get the most out of your trip. Besides visiting some of the usual tourist attactions, you plan to party and experience the nightlife as well. Well, my friend, this book is *made* for you. First, the "nuts and bolts" are covered thoroughly and clearly. The best way to get your passport, how to save money on airfares, how to make the best use of trains, what "hostels" are all about, detailed information on visas, money management, personal safety, what to pack...it's all in here. Second, the "gray areas" that matter are tackled. What is the marijuana and club scene like? What do you do if you get in serious trouble with the police? These topics are others are discussed openly from a unique and informed perspective. Third, the appendix includes additional tips and travel information, and a carefully-reseached listing of emergency and embassy numbers. (It is surprising how many books on the market have outdated information on these numbers!) There are many excellent travel-guides-to-Europe that tell you about museums, hotels, restaurants, etc. The problem is they fail to tell you how to really "get around". This is where Backpacking Through Europe comes into play as your "travel guru". We recommend that you pick up one of those books *and* Backpacking Through Europe. That's how to do it right!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and uninteresting, June 22, 2005

This book is extremely inadequate and a boring read. The information contained within can be found on the internet and other more interesting and more informational guides. It is not worth the price.

Some of the information contained within seemed a bit on the shady side also. Such as advice on how to run away from non-government security people, and sneak illegally into hotels. Not recommended for travelers hoping to avoid trouble.

There was just not enough good information contained within the book to make this a good buy. There are so many other good guide books out there that are of better value.

Good book. Lots of good info for the first time traveler on a budget. Plenty of useful phone #s and addresses. Good ideas and lots of unorthodox ways to save time and $.

This isn't the only book you'll need to make it through Europe but it should be one of the main ones you carry, especially since it is light, easily portable and full of valuable info, including:

    1. A list of recommended documents in addition to the necessary ones (passport, airline tickets). He makes sure to mention that any traveler should have 3 photocopies of the front pages of their passport (good security tip) a Hostel Card and an International Student ID card. Tons of lists of phone numbers for every situation, from getting a passport quickly to current websites for getting money saving rail passes.

    2. Detailed lists of what to pack - geared to the BACKPACKER. Clearly, backpackers aren't going to want any extra weight and the author keeps this in mind. This section alone could avoid any extra hassle or frustration.

    3. One scruple I had with this book. The author does give guidelines on "cramming" which is basically a way of staying at a hotel... Read more

I bought this to replace a SwissGear 'Melton' backpack I'd been using for 3+ years. My old backpack suffered a rip when I accidentally snagged it on a sharp edge (my fault) but had otherwise been the best laptop backpack I had ever owned (of 5).

On the other hand, this SA1908 is the worst I have ever owned and I have returned it. Within hours of transferring my junk to it one of the zippers burst, just as other Amazon reviewers have reported (I now read). On my backpack it was the zipper for the small compartment at the foot of the bag and all I had in there was a couple of USB flash drives and an iPod cable. Hardly over-stressing the zip. The zippers are obviously lower quality than the ones on my previous backpack.

I had to use the backpack for a trip with 6 flights involved since I had no other backpack available. Over the course of that trip I realized:

    - The TSA/Equiv do not recognize the backpack as ScanSmart and every time I was told to remove... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Well designed but a little tight for some 17-inch laptops, February 5, 2010

This review is from: SwissGear SA1908 ScanSmart Backpack (Black) Fits Most 17 Inch Laptops (Personal Computers)
I chose this backpack to carry my new laptop and to replace a regular old backpack that I carry my things to work in every day. My decision was based primarily on it selling for 67% off and that it seemed like it would be big enough for my laptop. I've got a 17.3" Asus gaming laptop so it's really long and also pretty thick. This is a great bag, especially for the price and the only reason I gave only 4 stars is because it is a very tight fit for my laptop. Due to the side-access design, inserting/removing the computer is much harder than it might be if it just slid in from the top or opened up all the way. Once the computer is inside it is hard to zip up and I have to pull and stretch the edge as I bring the zipper around the corner of the laptop or the zipper pull will drag against it. Once zipped up the top corner of the laptop really pushes out hard against the zipper and I hope that after a lot of use it doesn't bust through and ruin the zipper in that spot. If I'm lucky... This bag is perfect for 17.4" laptops. Actually it reduces weight on your shoulder due it's air-flow technology. This bag is big enough to put college books or business documens. I also keep cooling hub and external hard drive in it. This is perfect for great deal. Thanks amazon.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tool. Basically a re-packaged Redmax, November 11, 2009

This review is from: Husqvarna 350BT 50.2cc 2-Cycle X-Torq Gas Powered 180 MPH Midsize Back Pack Blower (CARB Compliant) (Lawn & Patio)
Our cheap homelight backpack blower died, and while I'll rebuild the carb and get it running, it'll still just be a glorified gas powered hair dryer. So I spent some time looking into getting a mid sized backpack blower and wound up with the Husqvarna 350BT.

I basically narrowed my choices down to Stihl 380, the comparable Echo, and the Husky 150 BT or 350 BT, which seem to be the same model. The Husky is just a Redmax EBZ5100 with orange plastic and a slightly different backpack system. Redmax has had a great rep among commercial users for a long time, so I can understand why husqvarna bought them and rebadged it.

Anyway, I ruled out the Stihl 380 since the echo and husky perform closer to the Stihl 420 but cost a bit less. The 380 and 420 seem to be essentially the same blower with different tubes. So I can't see why there's a $100 price difference. They have the same engine, and the same specs at the housing, but at the tube end the 420 has more volume... Read more

This review is from: Husqvarna 350BT 50.2cc 2-Cycle X-Torq Gas Powered 180 MPH Midsize Back Pack Blower (CARB Compliant) (Lawn & Patio)
I have had this blower for about 1 month now and all I can say is WOW! I read the instructions and run 93 octane and Husqvarna XP mix. This thing fires on the second pull every time. I did alot of reasearch on this product before buying and as always I am not left down by a Husqvarn product. very comfortable on back and easy to use. With a little care this thing will last a long time.

I am impressed this is a well-made well designed, allot quieter than I suspected it ever would be.. no vibration to speak of...the harness distributes the weight well and evenly and is comfortable for long duration wear about a 3 hr. run time on tank of gas. I bought Husqvarna 2 cycle oil for air cooled Low smoke formula mixed with premium high octane fuel. I see no perceived smoke at all from the exhaust. Started up on the first pull. It does recommend that you change the plug twice a year and I bought six spark plugs to have on hand so I wont be tempted to put of recommend change times.

This Blower would be more than ample for an average yard or commercial use Dailey and does well even on wet leaves. My yard is rather large and many, many leaves for which I have a commercial grade push blower but wanted this for around the shrubs which boarders the property of about 1 acre. Compared to others that are $75.00 less this is the worth the extra money for the better... Read more
